The site is owned and run by 
the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts.
Planet Science sits within the Future Innovators Team at NESTA, and contributes to the aims of this programme in three ways:
- Stimulating an interest in science and investigation: Science and technology are major drivers of innovation, and these sectors need passionate and ambitious scientists.
- Developing the skills and attitudes of future innovators: Learning about science helps young people to develop important skills for innovation, such as enquiry, research and problem-solving skills.
- Sharing learning/best practice: Teachers, parents and young people can use the free resources that have been tested by the Planet Science team.
NESTA had previously delivered the whole of the Planet Science and Science Year Projects for the DfES.

We maintain our links to the many science friends we made during this time, such as The ASE, Royal Society, BA and the Institute of Physics. We have also formed a special strategic relationship with the ETB.
Previously funded by the Department of Education and Skills, the Planet Science site is now fully funded by NESTA which derives its capital from its endowment of lottery money.
In the Lottery Act of 1998 – NESTA was set up set up to "Contribute to public knowledge and appreciation of science, technology and the arts."
It was also generously supported by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust in the site's transition phase between the DfES and NESTA.
The site is for all children who study science and the teachers and other adults who support them.
The different sections of the site reflect the different visitors who come to the site.
aims of the Planet Science Website
We aim to:
inspire teachers by example to have great creative ideas about how they teach science
inspire children and young people to think of scienceas a fascinating and creative endeavour, and a good potential career choice
inspire parents to think of science as an engaging and rewarding subject for their children, and themselves
we do this through:
- Providing examples of creative teaching ideas, resources, information and news from the wider science education sphere for primary and secondary science teachers.
- Providing games, interactive experiences, newsletters, careers and other content to demonstrate to children and young people that science is interesting, engaging and worthwhile.
- Providing content for younger children to experience with their parents and teachers to encourage them in science from an early age.
