Launch Day Diary 05.22am The sun rose on an exciting day the beginning of Science Year. 9.00am Eight major UK venues prepared for the launch: The Science Museum, London ThinkTank, Birmingham Glasgow University + the Glasgow Science Centre The W5 Discovery Centre, Belfast Techniquest, Cardiff Explore@Bristol Life Interactive World, Newcastle BAe Systems, Warton Aerodrome The Eden Project, Cornwall 10.00am Pre-launch entertainment began at launch venues. 10.29am Vanessa Collingridge greeted audiences at all eight venues via satellite link. 10.30am First screening of DfES careers video, Wheres the Science in That?, starring Harry Hill as a Mad Scientist meeting real scientists with cool jobs 10.35am London Science Museum Director Lindsay Sharp welcomed Science Year. 10.39am Science Year Director Nigel Paine explained what Science Year is all about. 10.45am Seismologist Murray McGowan gave and insight into earthquake geology and showed how the Giant Jump might or might not rock the UK to its foundations 10.50am David Hawksett from Guinness World Records described the TWO (count them!) world records the Giant Jump was hoping to set. 10.52am David Puttnam, Chair of NESTA and multi-Oscar winning film director, discussed the importance of science in society and the challenges facing Science Year. 10.57am Jonathan Edwards, Olympic triple jumper, shared the secrets of good jumping technique in preparation for the Giant Jump. 10.59.50am 10 second national countdown to the Giant Jump. 11.00am !!! THE GIANT JUMP !!! 11.03am The announcement was made about the Giant Jump world record attempts 11.04am The Secretary of State for Education, Estelle Morris launched Science Year. 11.13am The Minister for Science, Lord Sainsbury spoke 11.23am Interviews with...
