Welcome to Science year/ Corporate breakfast
Science Year's 1st keynote event
11.04am

"This is the first time I've been at a record setting attempt," said Estelle Morris, the Secretary of State for Education as she took the stage. Clearly impressed with the experiment, she described the Giant Jump as 'important but fun' science - a great combination.

Officially launching Science Year she insisted, "I want it to affect what goes on in schools and help teachers." And she added that she hoped it would be a year in which the general standing of science in society would be improved.

She went on to make several key announcements:

• The Kit Pot - a source of advanced laboratory equipment for secondary
schools, including an electronic microscope for all state secondary schools
in the UK and an electronic whiteboard and projector for every school with a
science Advanced Skills Teacher.

She also went on to encourage young people to use the existing Science Line resource whereby any science question can be answered over the phone or on their web site.
