Materials - How They Work

Material Science videos and lesson plans

Did you see the BBC's series Materials - How They Work? It was a great documentary showing how material science has influenced every aspect of our lives.

The BBC has created a material science resource for both primary and secondary schools. It contains video clips from the TV series and suggestions for how to use the videos in class.

The clips are useful for physics and chemistry lessons, as well as material science topics, including:

  • forces
  • chemical structure of metal and plastics
  • super conductivity
  • extraction of metals

My favourite clip is Super alloys and the jet engine. Material scientists manufactured a new alloy to survive in the extreme environment inside a jet engine!
