How do we sing?

See the inside of your eye!

Have a look at this video. What do you think it is?

Looks a bit disgusting, doesn't it? Did you work out what it is?

It's our vocal cords!

Although they look gross, vocal cords help us to speak and sing. Without them, we wouldn't be able to talk to our friends or sing along to Lady Gaga.

The vocal cords are at the top of the trachea - the tube leading to our lungs. We speak by blowing air from the lungs across the vocal cords. The vocal cords vibrate to make different sounds. The harder you blow air past the vocal cords, the louder the sound. That's why people sometimes take a deep breath before shouting. Try it and see!
