Bingo Bango

Make your own musical instrument

You can make almost anything into a musical instrument. Have a look at this video:

The instruments are called quitiplas. They're made out of bamboo. You can make your own! We call our instrument the bingo bango.

What you need:

  • Cardboard tubes of different sizes - wrapping paper tubes, kitchen paper tubes and toilet roll tubes work well
  • Scissors

How to:

Find a room with a hard floor, not carpet. Bang the bingo bango on the floor. Make different sounds by banging the instrument harder or softer, faster or slower. Try holding your handing over the top of the tube as you bang. Does that make a different sound? Try using two tubes of different sizes. If you need to cut your cardboard tubes into different sizes, ask an adult to use the scissors.

Another way of making a bingo bango is by using empty cans of different sizes. If you use cans make sure there are no sharp edges. You can make a huge bingo bango by taping the cans together!

What's happening:

Longer tubes make a deeper sound than shorter tubes. When you hit the tubes, you make the air vibrate and bounce around the tube. The air vibrates at many different frequencies.

Longer tubes amplify low frequency vibrations. This means that long tubes make low frequency vibrations louder, which makes a deep sound. Shorter tubs amplify high frequency vibrations, which makes a high pitched sound.
