activity 13: Home made fizzy drinks

From Thomas Green, aged 12

Ingredients:

6 teaspoons of citric acid crystals
3 teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda
2 tablespoons of icing sugar
cordial

What to do:

Mix together 6 teaspoons of citric acid crystals with 3 teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda. Add 2 tablespoons of icing sugar.

Fill a glass with cordial and water then add 2 teaspoons of your citric acid-soda-icing sugar mix. This should fizz.

Why?

When the crystals dissolve in the water they form citric acid which reacts with the alkali bicarbonate of soda forming carbon dioxide gas bubbles giving the drink fizz.
