You may not be a homeowner yourself but for anyone interested in doing their bit for the planets future, its worth knowing how you can adapt your living environment to be as eco-friendly as possible. There are some great sites out there with lots of good information, so theres no excuse. (And let us know if you come across any other good ones!). First of all, from one of the original green pioneers: Hebden Bridge Alternative Technology Centre Whether its advice on recycling, composting or sustainable housing youd like to know more about, this site has answers. And the links library is a particularly rich resource as it links to another eighty green sites with a short summary of what each has to offer and thus saves us the trouble of listing them all here. But dont take our word for it have a look for yourself! Advanced Buildings This website, which is based in Canada offers heaps of advice on the technology needed to build eco-friendly office or multi-apartment buildings for the 21st Century. All aspects of building design are covered, from the choice of concrete in the foundations to the light bulbs that would be the best for the environment. This site is super-comprehensive and easy to use, but it does (naturally enough) tend to focus on what is best for the North American builder, so if youre serious about green DIY in the UK, you may want to consult closer to home too. The Association for Environment Conscious Building The AECB is a UK-based trade organisation and one of the leaders in the area of independent environmental building. As the name suggests its a comprehensive resource and forum for independent builders who want to ensure that the buildings that they build or modify are are environmentally friendly. Theres a regularly updated forum with some interesting Q&As, and book service to help you keep your finger on the eco-pulse! City Of Dublin Energy Management Dublin is a city thats very much concerned with sustainable development, and their CODEMA website is full of information and advice on everything to do with energy conservation and management. You may not be a city planner yourself, but its an interesting look at the eco issue on a large scale. Go back |
