Pumpkins are fruits which grow on the ground on vines. They're related to things like marrows and courgettes, and they first came from the Americas; they were already being grown in Mexico as long as 9,000 years ago! The orange color is from carotene; that's the same thing that makes carrots orange, and which our bodies can use to make Vitamin A, which keeps your eyes healthy. When Europeans arrived in the New World, they brought the tradition of carving scary faces into turnips, swedes, or beets to frighten away evil spirits on Samhain, the Celtic harvest festival at the end of October. In America, pumpkins were easier to get hold of, or just easier to carve, and in modern Halloween celebrations, Jack O'Lanterns are usually the fruit of choice. On the Web:
