Sound Check Activities

...at number 9:

Seeing Sound 2

Wobble, wobble, on the wall…
Who is the noisiest of all?

You will need:

* a flat piece of rubber cut from an old rubber glove or a balloon
* a jam jar
* some glue
* some sequins
* a room you can darken
* a torch, or other light source

What to do:

1. Stretch the rubber over the neck of the jar and secure it with a rubber band – if you’re under 8, get an adult to do this for you.

2. Glue a few sequins to the stretched rubber.

3. Now position yourself and the jar so that you can get a shaft of sunlight, or the light from a torch or a lamp, to reflect off your sequins and onto a dark patch of wall.

4. Now make some noise! Speak, sing, clap near to the jar…. And watch as the light from the sequins jiggles on to the wall.

What's going on?

What you’re seeing is the result of the sound vibrations you’ve created. And the louder the sound, the bigger the jiggle…
