Changing the Times

Join in the 200th anniversary celebrations of Darwin's birth by dipping into some of these newspaper-based games and activities. Newsprint is the low-grade paper that newspapers are made from and you will discover that it is a wonderfully cheap and versatile material with which to explore all sorts of science. Take part in this newsprint extravaganza, following in spirit Darwin's epic 5-year journey around the world on HMS Beagle (1831-1836); a journey that proved so instrumental to Darwin's formulation of the theory of evolution.

Activities

  • The Times, the UK's oldest newspaper was founded in 1785? Reports on Darwin, his observations, ideas and theories would have appeared in this illustrious newspaper. How appropriate then that we re-use old copies of the Times to contemplate aspects of Darwin's life.
  • Charles Darwin's famous book, 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection', was deliberately written as a piece of popular writing so that it could be understood by all.
  • Darwin 200 is a national programme of events celebrating Charles Darwin's scientific ideas and their impact around his two hundredth birthday on 12th February 2009. Visit: www.darwin200.org
