Mysterious Parchment Invites

You will need:

* Sheets of white paper
* Scraps of ribbon or string
* Black felt tip pen
* Small squares of coloured card
* Scissors or a holepunch
And either
* Lemon juice and a cottonwool bud
Or
* A wax candle

What to do:

1. Write the following on the sheet of paper in black felt tip pen leaving plenty of space for your party details.

You are invited to a ……………………………….. party
On………………………………………………
At ……………………………………………

2. Using either lemon juice OR a wax candle write in your party details i.e. the name of the party, where it will be held, the date and time. Remember you won’t be able to see it so you might need a bit of practice first.

3. On a small square of coloured card you will need to write the instructions so that your friends can read your message.

4. If you have used lemon juice write this: Please rub a warm iron over your party invite. The details will magically appear! (Adult supervision required)

5. If you have used a wax candle write this: Please rub a pencil over this invite then use your finger to smooth over the marks. The details will magically appear!

6. Punch a hole in the corner of the instruction card and thread through some string or ribbon.

7. Roll up your parchment and tie it with the piece of string or ribbon so that the instruction card can easily be read.

8. Don’t forget to put the name of the child and your RSVP details on too!

What is happening?

In the case of lemon juice the heat from the iron will cause the citric acid to reduce to carbon and the writing will appear brown. Vinegar will work too, it is contains an acid known as acetic acid which will also reduce to carbon .

In the case of wax crayon and pencil the pencil lead is made from graphite which is very slippery. Graphite can be used as a lubricant. Did you notice how easily your finger rubs over it? Wax is very slippery too so the pencil markings will not stick to it like it sticks to the paper. As you rub the pencil markings the wax crayon will show up as white writing.
