1. The Wire  – Science news straight to your Inbox…

Make way Mr Boeing 747... The world's biggest passenger plane - the Airbus A380 - is finally here. It took its first public flight with 200 journalists on board when it made a two-hour flight from France. The plane is taller than six double decker buses and longer than a footie pitch. There’s plenty of room on board and there’s even talk of putting in shops and a gym! Airlines will be able to choose what they want to put on board so there might even be a cinema and bars. What would you like to see aboard?

The giant plane, which cost £170 million to make, is expected to fly passengers and holiday makers from London to Singapore later in the year.

Experts say the Airbus is much greener than other jumbos as it carries more people but uses less fuel so it causes less pollution per person.

Four facts about the Airbus A380:

  1. It is the length of eight London buses
  2. 70 cars could be parked on its wings
  3. It is 15m wider, 4m taller and 2m longer than a 747
  4. A 747 has room for 568 passengers but the Airbus could carry up to 853.

Why do humans have large, pointy noses when chimps and gorillas have hardly any nose at all? Questions like this can now be answered on a new web site http://www.askabiologist.org.uk/.

Dr David Hone has assembled a team of over 60 professional scientists from around the world to answer questions put to them on the site.

There is something between us that smells.

Father: Son, what are your results in the end of term exam?
Son: Underwater.
Father: What do you mean, underwater?
Son: Below "C" level.

The left one has nothing right in it and the right one has nothing left in it.
