This is a very popular little book with young children. As soon as the caterpillar hatches from its egg it munches its way through lots of food. It grows bigger and bigger, then turns into a butterfly.
This explains the life cycle of the butterfly. What happens to other animals in their lives? Compare the life cycle of a butterfly with the human life cycle. If the children had to go into a cocoon to become an adult what would they choose to cocoon them? Check through the book that the caterpillar does indeed move, feed, grow and use his senses. Get the children to make and colour in shapes of butterfly eggs, caterpillars, cocoons, and butterflies, then ask them to place them in the right order, which ever life stage you ask them to start at. You could also ask the children to match pictures of adult animals with the right offspring.
