The Hunchback of Notre DameKS1 SC4 3c

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the tale about the deformed Quasimodo who was banished to a French Cathedral tower in Notre Dame. The noise of the bells which came from the tower was the soul of the city and people used to plan their lives by it! The bells were so loud that he was made deaf.

Activities:

The story could be used as a starting point to discuss if there are noises which are too loud? Why should we be careful when putting the stereo on a high volume? In addition, why do sounds which everyone has to hear have to start from high up? Are there other examples of this type of sound? (war time sirens, public address systems at football matches….) is this why churches and temples are build on hills, and minarets are so tall?
