Once they live a great king called Uther and when he died all the princes and kings of other kingdoms fought over the territory each wanting it for themselves. However, unknown to anyone, Uther had a son called Arthur who nobody knew about. He was taken away when he was a baby by a wise man called Merlin who ensured that he was brought up in the family of Sir Ector. As problems hit England over the Kingdom the people prayed that some sign be given to shown them who was the rightful king. After their prayer, a mysterious stone appeared with a sword inside. Underneath the stone the following words were written: "Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone is rightwise king born of all England." Many knights and kings tried to pull the sword with all their might but no one could remove the sword. One day, Arthur pulled out the sword from the stone easily, and was crowned King of England.
The story could be used to explore different forces such as pushing and pulling. What might have stopped the sword from coming out of the stone (apart from Magic)? This can then be used to develop a discussion on friction. Practical activities might include playing with different toys and pushing and pulling. Start the activity off by asking the children to push and pull wooden blocks on the floor. Then use various materials under the block to make it harder or easier to move the block. You could use straws, or sandpaper or marbles!
A resource which teaches students about the different types of forces. Although, this is for interactive whiteboard it can be used on stand-alone computers Go Back to Curriculum Table |
