out and about...let's go out and about
Planet Science HQ has been the nerve-centre for a wide range of events and activities that have taken team members and our partners all around the country and in one case to the top of Mount Everest!
its been a busy couple of years! Heres the full lowdown:
- The Asda 'Big Science'
Exploring the science of the supermarket.
- BA Science Discovery Day
The Albert Hall alive with science activities of all shapes and sizes.
- DNA Day
A world-beating celebration of the "secret of life"
- The Giant Jump
One million kids took part in our earth-shaking experiment Try for yourself!
- Lab Days
Laboratories invited the public to come in and see what they do.
- Science Teacher Climbs Everest
Collaboration with New Media to support record-breaking online science lessons from a physics teacher at high altitude!
- Science Year On Tour
On the road with the Campaign to Promote Engineering in public places around the UK.
- Tomorrow's World Live
Live demonstrations and activities on stage, plus a chance to meet the public.
the asda 'big science'
Supermarket Sweep met the National Curriculum, as ASDA ran its year-long 'Big Science' initiative.
This was an educational and interactive scheme designed to link classroom-based learning with real life experience. Science 'trails' were devised to take participants around their stores based following four scientific themes.
Teachers notes, a parental guidance leaflet and an online resource full of experiments and curriculum materials were also developed to suit both the Scottish and England/Wales curricula.
BA science discovery day
The Royal Albert Hall in London was alive with the sound of not music but science in a special event hosted for 4000 school children as part of National Science week 2002.
Participants got the chance to try out all sorts of science-linked activities, from making-their-own-slime, to inspecting NASA moonrock samples, to re-creating the chemistry of comets and observing (real) birds of prey as they circled around the auditorium as part of the very popular falconry show.
lab days
This was an initiative that was developed in order to create opportunities for teenagers and adults to visit interesting and usually inaccessible laboratories to see science in action.
The idea was to offer high quality, informed and engaging interactive visits to factories, research facilities or anywhere where science is practiced. The initiative was organised through the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network (SETNET) through its SETPOINTS and BBCi.
Science Year on Tour ran during 2002, visiting shopping centres around the UK. The idea was to bring scientists and fun interactive exhibits into a very public venue, to fire up the imagination about science, and about careers in science.
Each venue was staffed by local people, including students, scientists and engineers and entertainers, and the event was organised by the Campaign to Promote Engineering (CPE) in partnership with the Science Engineering Technology Mathematics Network (SETNET) through their SETPOINTS.
Science Year on Tour was also supported by the Department of Trade and Industry and the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) who share CPEs desire to see the publics perceptions of science, engineering, technology and mathematics enhanced.
tomorrow's world live
The Science Year/Planet Science team were out in force, not once but TWICE at the annual Tomorrows World Live touring mega-show.
Live demonstrations and activities were the name of the game, with crowd pleasers like the Ready Steady Science challenge and Custard Gone Crazy being performed on a regular basis to packed audiences through the day. Friends like staff from SciZmic and ThinkTank came along too to make the shows go with a swing.
