water down the plughole... extension experiments

Try something a little different and see what happens.

the basin

What difference does the size of the basin make?
Use a number of basins whose main difference is their size. Record the results and compare them to the results you got from the basic Water Down the Plughole experiment.

What difference does the shape of the basin make?
Use a number of basins whose main difference is their shape. Record the results and compare them to the results you got from the basic Water Down the Plughole experiment.

What difference does the surface of the basin make?
Try the experiment using containers with different surface textures. You can also modify the surface texture of a container by sticking things onto it, such as pebbles, matches, sandpaper or lumps of sticky adhesive.

the plughole

What difference does the position of the hole make?
Use a number of different tubs, each with the same basic design but with the hole positioned in different places. Record the results and compare them with your Water Down the Plughole results.

What difference does the size or shape of the hole make?
Use a number of different tubs, each with a different shape, size or pattern of plughole. Record the results and compare them with your Water Down the Plughole results.

the water

What effect does turbulence in the water have?
Try the experiment without letting the water settle, and compare the results with what you saw earlier. Is there any difference?
Also try varying the length of time you let the water settle for.

What effect does the viscosity of the water have?
Try the experiment using water which has had thickening agents added. Examples include detergent, cornflour or sugar
