have you got a science kid on your hands?... getting out and about
There’s plenty to interest kids inside the house but there’s loads to do outside too.
the natural world
To a junior scientist, a trip to your local duckpond or beach can be as exciting as an all expenses paid week in San Francisco would be to the older generation!
You don’t need to go far, you just need to have the time to let your child explore the wonders of nature. Try thinking about ways that you can have extra fun - ie. extra science! - while you’re there, for example by working out how you can tell whether the tide’s going in or out while you’re on your beach walk (tip: draw something large in the sand near the shoreline then go for a walk, and when you come back, you can see if the waves are further away… or whether the waves have washed over part of all of the drawing. Or look at the leaves on different trees, and see whether you can learn to tell one from another some kids are very good at this!
science centres
Been to a museum or science centre recently? If not, do. There are loads of them around, and nowadays the standard of interactive resources and information is very high amazingly high. Most science centres are so packed with things for kids to do that you’ll be there for several hours… not including the café!
