Cunning plans for secondary school students aged 11 to 14.
Run the idea by your science teacher. If they are dubious, assure them that it will be safe, fun and educational (they’ll like the last bit). Also, that you’ll do all your own planning, and any tidying up needed. You’ll even set homework! All they need to do is turn up and be the responsible adult, and enjoy
people needed
A pupil to be teacher.
Someone to be master of ceremonies (MC) – to introduce the teacher and when it’s all done, round off the lesson by thanking all concerned, hopefully with spontaneous applause and a certain amount of joyous whooping.
A teacher’s assistant, to help with some of the demos, and hand out the homework sheets at the end.
A couple of pupils who’ve brought in roller skates or skateboard (and who won’t fall off when standing on them!)
A tech-head, if you are planning to show the sci cast films, or any pics using a computer and data projector / interactive whiteboard. Your techie should know the kit well, so they’re not freaked out if the stuff goes into screensaver mode or the sound mysteriously disappears.
A stooge (optional). If you think some of your pupils may give idiot answers on purpose (maybe to wind you up) you may like to have a friendly face that you’ll know will give a sensible answer. If things get heavy going, you can pick your stooge to answer the question, and steer the lesson back the way you want it to go.
The rest of your class to be pupils, as normal, but with a fantastic new teacher.
getting the lab or classroom ready
It would be helpful if you get into the room 15 minutes or so before your pupils arrive, so you can set up, and check stuff will work. If you have internet access, (and preferably a data projector or interactive whiteboard) you can show the scicast films (listed later).
