The Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) is officially launching the year in September 2001. Prior to the launch date, there will be a number of warm-ups to raise awareness about the Year.
A TV advertising campaign aimed at 10-15 year olds will be broadcast from 5 March 2001. The advertising will highlight the role that science and scientific principles play in everyday life and show a fun side to science. The advertisements end by encouraging young people to phone or visit the Science Year website to order a free Science Pack.
The pack contains cards of seven interesting materials. These are examples of what are known as smart or intelligent materials, because they respond to their environment in some way. The cards will help students to discover science in their everyday lives.
To accompany the student card pack we have produced a teachers' booklet. The booklet tells you what the cards are made from, how they work and which scientific principles they focus on. The booklet also contains suggested points for discussion to help you form lesson plans around the cards. The card itself may also provide a basis to a practical class exercise.
