Here’s what’s coming up in issue 2:
Have you visited the Planet Science website lately? If not then make sure you enter the Autumn Quiz before it's too late. We have three skateboards for the lucky winners. Here’s the link:
Now on to other Planet Science news:
We want to thank you for being a Hay-Wire member. But we don’t say thank you with a bunch of pretty flowers. At Hay-Wire, we send you a fantastic Frisbee instead!
It’s still not too late to claim your FREE Frisbee. Just send your name and address to: with ‘FREE FRISBEE PLEASE’ as the subject and we’ll pop one in the post!
If you’ve already sent your name and address then we have your details and a Frisbee will be with you shortly.
Do you always get told off for doodling in class? Want to know a place where you can actually win a prize for doodling? Well, here it is:
The website is called Robodoodle. It’s been put together by The Open University. They want children to use the website to doodle a REALLY USEFUL robot.
A really useful robot could be a robot that brushes your teeth in the mornings. How about a robot that does your homework? It doesn’t matter what sort of robot you doodle just make it a useful robot. You could even design a robot that helps out in school. It could wash the paintbrushes!
When you visit the website you’ll find a sketching tool. This is what you use to doodle your robot. You can even erase any mistakes you make. There are prizes to be won for the best ideas, but get doodling now as the competition ends soon!
Most of our Hay-Wire Club members love doing experiments at home. So we’re giving away SIX DYNAMIC REACTION TUBES. Inside the tubes you’ll find the kit for completing these cool experiments, and many more:
To win a tube, send an email with your name and address to:
Hay-Wire.Clubhouse@nesta.org
Write ‘I WANT A TUBE’ in the subject box and your details will go into the draw. Look out for the winners in next Friday’s Hay-Wire.
Talking of reactions, you’ll erupt with excitement at this experiment, but you must ask an adult to help you.
The bicarbonate of soda falls into the vinegar and begins to fizz. Next, the balloon starts to blow up (inflate). Mixing vinegar with bicarbonate of soda causes a chemical reaction, giving off a gas called carbon dioxide. The gas causes the balloon to inflate.
