If you were in or around Plymouth last Wednesday night you might have noticed a bit (!) of commotion. Some 55,000 firework rockets lit up the night skies in a noisy world record attempt. The monster bang was set up by Dr Roy Lowry from the University of Plymouth to mark the 10th anniversary of the British Firework Championships.
To get the record, all the bangers had to go off in five seconds. Experts are now checking film of the event to decide if the record has been broken. The current record is 39,210 rockets set off by Terry McDonald in the Channel Island of Jersey in 1997.

Have you read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Remember Violet Beauregarde? She should have been called Violet No-regard (for her teeth, that is). All that chewing and gnashing on gum. What a disgusting habit. Scientists have come up with a gum that contains bacteria that are good for your gnashers. The good bugs in the gum stop the germs that cause tooth decay from sticking to and attacking your pearly whites. Other products, like toothpastes and mouthwashes, containing the bacteria, which is called Lactobacillus anti-caries, are going to be marketed. The bug could also be put in deodorants to beat body odour. Stinky armpits are often caused by bacteria, and the clever Lactobacillus beats that bug too.
To find out how to look after your teeth
The new chewing gum should be out in shops in 2007. But chewing the gum doesn't mean you can skip brushing your teeth. Dentists say the best way to look after your mouth is to brush regularly, use fluoride to strengthen your teeth and avoid sugary foods. Plus you know what happened to Violet Beauregarde don’t you? Don’t mention blueberry pie…
