2. The Wire  – Science news straight to your Inbox…

Scientists have found a good night's sleep improves your memory. In a test, people were shown cards with symbols on them, followed by weather reports. Twelve hours after training, people were asked to guess the weather from the symbols. After sleeping, their predictions were 10% better.  The head of the research says sleep helps us to understand information as well as just remembering facts.  So now you know what to say when you’re caught snoozing in class…

An enormous squid that’s as long as a double-decker bus has been caught by fishermen in New Zealand. The gigantic sea creature is about 10m long, weighs 450kg and is thought to be the first adult colossal squid that's been caught in one piece. It was lunching on a hooked toothfish when it was reeled in by the fishermen in deep Antarctic waters. The ship's captain said they decided to take the squid back to shore when they realised it was too ill to release. Don’t tell us – it was the sick squid he owed them…

Join the BBC nest box challenge by putting a box in your garden, school or workplace. Register your box and help the British Trust for Ornithology with its wild bird survey by telling them if any birds move in!

Are you in Y10 or 11? Fancy entering the Schools Bioethics Essay Competition 2007 ? If you can write a 1000 words or less on bioethical concerns e.g. stem cell research or medical testing) then you could win a money prize. Plus present your essay at the conference in June at Kings College, Cambridge.  You can also have a tour of the University of Cambridge, and talk about University life with undergraduates and the admissions team. Travel expenses will be paid for.
