What could be better than sitting around reading this week’s Wired Up? Having a whale of a time at the 21st World Scout Jamboree of course! Along with 40,000 scouts from all around the world.  That’s a lot of scouts.  And Planet Science is right there with them – so if you fancy cantering on custard then look out for the Planet Science tent. In the meantime, as we were saying – what could be better than reading this week’s Wired Up?

2. Scinet – You don’t have to surf the Internet alone…

What do you know about Alfred Nobel? Inventor of dynamite? Founder of the Nobel prizes? Find out more about him and and try your hand at some Educational Games - The Nobel Prize in Chemistry such as Conductive Polymers – furnish your future house and find out about conductive polymers. Plus there are other games for Physics and Medicine.

Everything you ever wanted to know about hamsters is at Thames Valley Rodents

NASA For Kids Only says ‘If you spend some time at this site, you'll learn a few things most adults don't know’. Now that has to be a challenge. Listen to an earthquake rumble. Look into the eye of a hurricane. Find out why the wind blows. Play games with sound effects. Make complicated science fun.

Power Up is an interactive website allowing you to explore the science behind electricity and basic electrical safety.

And if that’s not enough science for you then don’t forget to visit GlaxoSmith Kline’s Active Science site There’s something for everyone.

3. Gear for Grabs – July Flipside

Need a bit of help perfecting your wizard spells, lotions and potions? Lucky for you Hands On, Science Oxford, is running a 'Science of Wizardry' interactive exhibition during the summer holidays. You will finally be able to reveal invisible writing, defy gravity and fool your friends with loads of fun illusions. You can even have a go at making your own balancing dragon and lots more.

We’ve got a family ticket to give away so if you want to win one, send us your name, age and address to: wired-up.news@nesta.org.uk with ‘WIZARD AT SCIENCE’ as the subject. The winners will be picked at random at 5pm on Wednesday 15th August 2007.

Good luck!

Yummy lip gloss

Make a gorgeous lip gloss from yummy honey and other natural ingredients.

Now that summer is finally here you could find your lips start to suffer a little in the sun. Protect sensitive lips with this simple yet rich lip balm. Delightful to wear alone or on top of your lipstick for extra shine! Makes a great homemade gift too.

You will need:

  • 1tbsp sweet almond oil
  • 10 fresh raspberries
  • 1tsp honey
  • 1 drop Vitamin E oil (optional)
  • A sieve or a tea strainer
  • A small portable plastic container or tin
  • Decorative stickers, gift box and tissue paper (if you're making it for someone else)

What to do:

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for two minutes or until the mixture just begins to boil.
  2. (If you don't have a microwave, place the bowl on top of a pan of water on a stovetop and then boil the water. This will take longer and you have to be careful not to let the water boil over into the mixture. If you are doing it this way you should get an adult to supervise you.)
  3. Stir well and gently crush the berries.
  4. Cool mixture for five minutes.
  5. Strain through a fine sieve or tea strainer to remove all the fruit pieces.
  6. Stir again and set aside to cool completely.
  7. When cool, transfer into your container.
  8. Apply a small amount onto your lips and remember to smile!
  9. (If you're making this as a gift, decorate your container with stickers and put in a gift box lined with tissue paper.)

What’s going on?

The miracle ingredient in this lipgloss recipe is the honey. It acts as an antioxidant, moisturizer and gloss. Antioxidants like Vitamin C or green tea extract are key ingredients in many expensive skincare products. They are not absorbed into your skin, but they might protect your skin on the outside from damage by sunlight and pollution.

Scientists think the antioxidants in honey are probably the molecules called flavinoids, which give honey its great taste.

Honey is also hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water from the air, so it helps to maintain the natural balance of water in the cells in your lips. The almond oil forms a protective layer to stop the water evaporating.

Together, the honey and the oil fill in all the crevices in your lips and make them look smooth and glossy. The berries add natural colour and flavour. Add all this together for lips that look, smell and taste gorgeous!

Try different berries (strawberries, cranberries or blueberries) or other soft fruits (peaches or plums) for different colours and flavours.
